The Overly Anxious Patient
The Overly Anxious Patient
The overly anxious patient is generally benign, but may be the most time consuming and emotionally draining type of patient. This patient repeats the same questions before every decision, despite similar repeated detailed answers given by the physician and staff. Some excessively anxious patients just require reassurance. However, informed consent requires that the patient has had all of her questions answered. Determining whether the patient wants the physician to make the decision for her or whether she is not ready for the procedure can sometimes be difficult. If unsure, suggest that the patient return another day after thinking about it further. Both physician and staff should be prepared for frequent calls before and after any procedures. Most important, despite the frustration of having to repeat the same information, everyone must treat the patient with kindness and seriousness.22
