Sodium deoxycholate
Recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), deoxycholic acid injection (Kybella) is the first minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment for the reduction of submental fullness. Subcutaneous injection of deoxycholic acid into submental fat results in adipocyte lysis, leading to significant, localized fat reduction.22โ24 Four phase 3 trials have demonstrated significant clinical efficacy25โ28 with only minimal side effects, such as pain, swelling, bruising, and erythema. Although increased skin laxity is normally a concern after removal of targeted subcutaneous fat, secondary or adjunctive procedures for skin tightening have not been routinely required after injection, suggesting that deoxycholic acid may induce concomitant skin retraction (Fig. 79-1).29
