Topical formulations are helpful components of an ongoing, preventative, or restorative skin-care regimen, although care must be taken: the thin, crepey skin of the neck is delicate and prone to irritation or injury that can be slow to heal. There are a staggering number of day and night formulations on the market that contain additives designed to improve skin texture and appearance: moisturizing agents to smooth and hydrate, antioxidants (e.g., vitamins C and E) to reduce oxidative stress and free-radical damage, and topical growth factors and peptides to boost collagen and elastin production for improvements in laxity and fine rhytides.4,5 Retinoid acidโthe active form of vitamin A and considered the gold standard treatment for photodamageโinduces neocollagenesis for marked improvement in elasticity, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation, but is more likely to cause significant irritation in the neck and should be used cautiously and at low strength. Nonprescription retinolโthe weaker versionโmay produce similar efficacy
with better tolerability.6
