Preparation

Preparation

After the informed consent process and preoperative consultation are completed, the

skin is prepped and infused with local anesthetic (see Chapter 12). A sterile skin prep is generally performed for dermatologic surgery excisions, though data have suggested that the use of sterile gloves for brief and straightforward procedures may not confer a reduced risk of postoperative wound infection.46โ€“48 Common surgical scrubs include chlorhexidine and povidoneโ€“iodine; the former confers the advantage of rapid onset of action even while wet,49 though chlorhexidine should be kept out of the eyes and ears due to risks of keratitis and ototoxicity, respectively.50
