INDICATIONS

Cryotherapy has been reported for a broad range of dermatologic conditions including malignant, infectious, autoimmune, and inflammatory conditions.14 General guidelines recommend a single freeze–thaw cycle for treating benign conditions. This approach is less likely to lead to poor healing or scarring, and treatment can be safely repeated at a later date since the condition is benign. The majority of published findings for treating many of the listed conditions consist of case reports or small uncontrolled series, though larger studies exist for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and actinic keratoses have been performed. Table 15-1 is a summary of benign conditions treated with cryotherapy and Table 15-2 is a summary of malignant and premalignant conditions treated with cryotherapy.
