The recommended doses for lidocaine without epinephrine in children over 3 years of age should not exceed 1.5 to 2.0 mg/kg, and with epinephrine 3.0 to 4.5 mg/kg.6,14 The use of preservative-free anesthetic is preferred in neonates with jaundice.38 This is due to the intrinsic bilirubin displacement properties of parabens found within preservativecontaining anesthetics.

Topical anesthetics can induce toxicity in children, and care must be taken when using these agents.5,56 The recommended pediatric does for EMLA cream can be found in Table 12-15.5,53
