除了針對問題的身體檢查 (problem-focused physical examination) 以及對任何擬議術式 (proposed procedure) 的說明之外，一般病史應包括內科、外科與社會史 (medical, surgical, and social history)，以及對目前用藥與過敏史 (current medications and allergies) 的回顧。內科疾病可能影響皮膚外科手術 (dermatologic surgery) 的結果，因此應仔細審查這些情況，尤其是當病人有高血壓 (hypertension)、糖尿病 (diabetes)、吸菸 (smoking)、飲酒 (alcohol use) 或其他心血管疾病 (cardiovascular disease) 病史時。
