As with any elective surgery, patients must be healthy enough for surgery and anesthesia. Extensive flap undermining can be complicated by bleeding (hematoma), smoking (necrosis), and systemic medications. Patients with obesity, systemic comorbidities, or a history of anesthesia-related complications must have a comprehensive medical workup performed prior to surgery. All medications that affect platelet function are typically stopped several weeks prior to surgery.
