The above recommendations serve as a template for the aesthetic application of BTX therapy. However, the most critical guideline to bear in mind is to always tailor each treatment to the individual anatomical, personal, and cultural preferences of each patient. Appreciation should be given to both gender and ethnic differences. Men tend to have heavier musculature and therefore usually require a higher dosage in order to achieve the same efficacy and longevity. The male aesthetic is also different, especially where it concerns brow shape and jawline. These considerations should be discussed with the patient prior to treatment so that the correct expectations can be set and the necessary adjustments in injection technique can be applied.
Cultural and ethnic norms should also be taken into account when tailoring individual treatments, as desires and expectations can vary significantly between these diverse populations.100 Asian patients tend to desire a subtler brow arch or no arch at all, and so alterations in glabellar and frontalis injections may be required. Additionally, these patients also place higher importance and benefit more from infraorbit and masseter treatment.101,102 Other ethnic preferences that have been studied include Hispanic,103
Russian,104 Indian,105 African,106 and Middle Eastern.107 Once again, the duty of the dermatologic surgeon is to explore these nuances with each patient in order to deliver an optimized treatment regimen.
