Wounds can be classified (I to IV) according to the site and status of the wound preoperatively (Table 36-5).107 While there are differing definitions of localized surgical skin infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that a superficial surgical site infection (SSI) can be diagnosed if it involves skin, subcutaneous tissues, or muscle above the fascial layer at the incision site, occurs within 30 days of surgery, and at least one of the following is present:
