Patients should be appropriately counseled regarding the anticipated difficulty with eating and speaking prior to pedicle division. Many patients are concerned about the edematous appearance of the flap, and they should be reassured that edema is normal for 4 to 6 months. No revisions should be attempted prior to 6 months to allow this swelling to resolve. Sensory and motor functions are affected during the procedure and it may require a year or more to regain complete neuromuscular function. Permanent dysfunction is possible, though rare, and patients should be appropriately counseled. Misalignment of the vermilion is noticeable, and is more easily prevented than revised.
