Postoperative instructions

The Abbe flap serves as a connection between the upper and lower lips and prevents complete opening of the mouth. A liquid or soft diet is needed until pedicle division. Because narcotics can cause nausea and vomiting, antiemetics should be prescribed, or nonnarcotic analgesics should be considered. Many surgeons may also administer intraoperative or postoperative antibiotics. A bulky dressing is not needed for this repair and standard wound care with petrolatum ointment is recommended.
