FLAP CHOICE AND CONSIDERATIONS
FLAP CHOICE AND CONSIDERATIONS
After extirpation of the tumor, the defect should be examined with respect to the cosmetic units involved.7 Repairs that respect cosmetic units and stay within these boundaries often produce the best results. Defects that traverse more than one cosmetic subunit should ideally be repaired individually, instead of using a single repair method that crosses multiple units.8,9
Flaps are typically categorized based on the type of movement involved, such as advancement, rotation, transposition, or interpolation; or by the blood supply pattern, for example, random or axial. Random pattern flaps are supplied by dermal vasculature, while axial pattern flaps are supplied by named vessels; the former are more frequently performed in dermatologic surgery.
