M-plasty

M-plasty

M-plasty can be conceptualized as a small V-Y closure at one pole of an otherwise linear repair, and is useful for reducing the length of a linear closure. This approach is classically used around the eyelids, where the M-plasty may be hidden along the rhytides, though it can be used in any situation where a standard dog-ear repair would approach free margins or adjacent cosmetic subunits. The net result of M-plasty formation is that the dog-ear length is reduced by approximately 1/2. For a detailed discussion of dog-ear repair techniques, see Chapter 19.
