Infections
While abscess is one of the most frequently seen indications to perform I&D, local infection can occur in noninfectious indications of I&D as a result of the procedure itself. Purulent drainage, swelling, persistent redness, and delayed healing may be evident, and when these are noted, the patient should undergo evaluation and treatment. Management of these infections includes an appropriate topical and/or systemic antibiotic, daily wound care, and repeat I&D, if the site develops an abscess with fluctuance. Responsible organisms vary by anatomic location, though Staphylococcus aureus is most commonly seen.
