Patient education and evaluation

Patient education and evaluation

Patient evaluation should include inquiry as to history of lidocaine allergy, latex allergy, and hypertrophic scars or keloids. Further, the patientโ€™s expectations of the cosmetic outcome should be discussed. Informed consent should be obtained and the patient should be counseled regarding the risks, benefits, and alternatives of the procedure, as well as potential risks of not undergoing the procedure (e.g., acute abscesses). Risks include, but are not limited to, infection (new or worsening of existing infection), bleeding, pain, nerve damage, and scar formation (keloids and hypertrophic scars).
