Kaposi sarcoma
Kaposi sarcoma
Kaposi sarcoma, when limited to the skin, may respond well to cryosurgery. A retrospective cohort study of 30 patients was reported in 2013. Patients received two freezeโthaw cycles lasting 15 to 40 seconds/cycle with a 3-mm margin every 4 weeks. Nineteen (63%) patients experienced a complete response, eight showed a partial response, and three patients discontinued therapy due to an increasing number of lesions.32
CONCLUSIONS
Cryosurgery has become a well-established, safe treatment modality for a wide range of conditions, and will likely remain a fixture in dermatologic surgery for years to come. New developments may include modifications in cryogen delivery methods and the refinement of temperature detection at the surface of the skin. Additionally, other techniques, including fractional cryosurgery, may become more widely employed, expanding the application of cryosurgery to larger tumors.33,34
