Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma

Data on cryotherapy for squamous cell carcinomas is similar to that found for the treatment of basal cell carcinomas in many respects. Pooled analysis of observational studies using cryotherapy reported only one recurrence (0.8%) out of 273 patients treated in 8 studies.27 Mean follow-up ranged from 2 to 5 years. A retrospective series of 563 squamous cell carcinomas treated over a 23-year period described a 97% cure rate, though the definition of โ€œcureโ€ was unclear and no follow-up time was reported.28 Of all the modalities included in the pooled analysis of observation studies for interventions for nonmetastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, cryotherapy along with electrodessication and curettage had the highest cure rates for squamous cell carcinomas, but most tumors were small and deemed to be low risk.27 As with the studies on basal cell carcinoma, itโ€™s not clear that the techniques employed for the studiesโ€”including debulking and prolonged freezing timesโ€”are the same techniques employed by contemporary dermatologists.
