Warts

Veruccae vulgaris are commonly treated with cryosurgery. A 2014 Cochrane review analyzed 21 studies of cryosurgery for treating warts.15 Meta-analysis of cryosurgery versus placebo failed to show a statistically significant difference; 41 of 107 (38.3%) of warts resolved with cryosurgery. The largest and the most recent of the included studies comparing cryosurgery to placebo did, however, demonstrate a therapeutic advantage to cryosurgery. Thirty of 76 (39.5%) warts in the cryosurgery group responded compared to 13 of 82 (15.9%) in the placebo group.16 Furthermore, treatment intervals every 2, 3, or 4 weeks did not impact cure rates. Aggressive cryotherapy was, however, more effective than gentle cryotherapy. Aggressive cryotherapy was also associated with a higher incidence of pain and blistering.17
