Running variations

Running variations of buried sutures permit rapid placement of a long row of buried sutures that are anchored by knots at either end. The speed advantage is offset, however, by the reliance on only two anchor points along an entire wound. Since buried sutures are designed to bear the tension across a wound, relying on a single anchoring suture knot at each end of the wound may be unwise, as break in suture material anywhere along the suture line (or knot compromise at either end) may result in catastrophic consequences.
